Tips for Transiting in Changi Airport
Recently, I made a trip to South Asia which involved a rather substantial transit in Singapore‘s Changi airport from around midnight till the following afternoon. While I hate long transits, especially in the middle of the night, I found some decent information online on how to make my stay painless. In particular, I found Ho John Lee‘s posting on the topic extremely useful and I recommend reading it if you will be passing through Changi.
However, given my recent experience, I felt I’d add some additional information here.
Sleep/Rest
I completely agree with Ho John Lee’s assessment of the Ambassador Transit Hotel. For the ~US$35 price tag for a 6 hour block its well worth the comfort of a good night’s sleep, shower supplies (which aren’t always welcome in hand luggage) and the wake up calls that ensure you don’t miss your flight! For longer transits after long journey’s definitely a better option than sleeping in one of the rest areas in the airport.
Internet Access
For the traveling technophile, internet access is key. While other travelers have mentioned the availability of free wireless at the Changi airport, significant efforts on my part failed to yield this. However, there are plenty of Internet Kiosks open to travels and also plenty of ethernet drops. Carry a UTP cable with you and you’ll be up and running in no time! I was able to get a good 6 hours of work done while waiting for my connection.
Food
For a country that small, being at the crossroads of air and maritime routes certainly have influenced the cuisine available in the country and this is also reflected in the options available at the airport. For a power breakfast, I recommend Kopi (dark coffee – cream is optional) and Kaya (Coconut + Egg Jam) Toast.
Enjoy your transit and do share your experiences!
